So if you get your puppy over the age of 4 month, or if your puppy did not meet all their socialization needs before the age of 4 months, does that mean that you lost your opportunity to have a well behaved dog? The answer is no.


Dogs continue learning throughout their lives, the only difference is the speed in which they're receiving and processing lessons. With the right techniques, you can shape a dog's behavior as well and change the dog's demeanor well into adulthood. Your dog's demeanor doesn't "solidify" until around the age of 2 - 3 year old.

Your dog is very smart, at this stage they are building confidence and figuring out the rules of the house. They are learning what they can get away with and what is not allowed. At this stage you should spend lots of time with your dog reinforcing wanted behaviors. Working on impulse control and recall.


Your dog will soon become a teenager and all rules and lessons will fly out the window. During adolescence you will have to teach everything your have taught your dog over again. The more you work with your dog before that time period, the easier adolescence will be.
